Here are some facts to consider before a move
(1) If it's in your basement and hasn't been used in years, consider donating or selling it. Don't pay to have it moved.
(2) Pack the wicker baskets, pots, pans, Tupperware, clothing, toys, and other non-fragile items yourself. Save the fragile items for the pros.
(3) On local moves, consider transporting lamps, shades, small pictures, etc., in your car. We can move your lamps, BUT... we have to unplug, wrap up the cord, remove the shade, and blanket wrap the lamp to ensure it arrives safely. This takes time, and time is money.
(4) Limit the open top cartons with things protruding out the top. Two or three are fine, BUT... I have seen homes with 20 or more. I can't stack these cartons, and it may take two trips to get your things moved safely.
(5) We love animals and kids, so please designate an empty room or friend/relative to care for them during the move process for safety's sake.
(6) Have a plan for where your furniture will be placed at the new house. The more organized you are, the more money you will save.
(7) When packing, keep the heavy items in small cartons (books, canned goods, etc.). If you can't lift the box, it's probably too heavy.
(8) Clothing is fine to leave in the dressers. But please remove breakables, valuables, and heavy books, etc.
(9) Have your gas dryer / range disconnected and the lines properly capped prior to moving day. Most movers shy away from appliance connections for insurance reasons.
(10) I know you can get free boxes at the grocery store, but they are not as strong or heavily corrugated as professional moving cartons. I usually have used cartons available for my customers. Just ask!!
(11) Keep in mind, movers are not liable for cartons they didn't pack.
(12) Long Distance Moving Tip: Get several estimates (3) and compare the estimated weight and services they will provide for that cost. This will alleviate those all too common extra charges your confronted with at your new home. Educate yourself and ask a lot of questions.
(13) Communication is the key to a smooth move!! |
